Are you getting quality wall graphics?
Short, Boring, But Important Questions
You're on track if your wall graphics company is asking you these questions.
Customization is exciting for us and our clients. It means that our clients are getting what they want specifically designed and fabricated to meet their needs. With wide format digital printing, pretty much anything imaginable can be designed, enlarged, and printed on wall graphics material.
Super important though, is the fact that while wall vinyls may all look the same, their adhesive, duration, and surface qualities are scientifically designed for use in specific conditions. It is not a one size fits all business. It doesn't matter if the print looks great if it doesn't stay up on your wall. It also doesn't matter if it stays up on the wall but fades or degrades. And if you eventually want to remove the graphic, you certainly don't want to damage the underlying surface.
Here is the checklist we review with all our clients before we recommend a custom wall graphics solution.
1. Wall location
2. Graphic Size
- Length x Height + margin for out-of-square conditions
- On-site confirmed measurements for highly out-of-square or unusual shaped walls
3. Length of time graphic or mural will be installed
- Less than 90 days
- 90 days to one year
- One to three years
- Longer than three years
3M, Avery and other brand name manufacturers have developed unique adhesive formulations designed for specific time frames - from low tack repositionable to permanant adhesives. We want to use the right material for your project.
4. Graphic exposure conditions
- Constant temperature and humidity
- Temperature changes
- Direct sun
- Heating or cooling ducts in close proximity
- People can/will be able to touch it
Answers to these questions determine the right materials and reveal the need for lamination to protect the digitally printed graphics.
5. Basic wall construction
- Concrete Block
- Pouded concrete
- Vinyl Wall covering
- Other (describe:) _____________________
6. Is the wall painted?
- Water base?
- Oil base?
7. If painted, how long since last painted?
Nothing is worse for a new graphic or mural than a freshly painted wall. While paint may appear dry, it is actually curing over a 2-3 week period after painting is complete. During this curing period the paint is releasing gasses that interfere with the adhesion of wall graphics. Paint must cure before graphics or murals can be installed.
8. Describe wall texture
- Unsmooth Texture (medium/heavy/stucco/brick)
There are amazing products on the market designed to conform to highly textured surfaces, like brick or stucco. This premium material is perfect for these complex applications, but potentially overkill for a standard wall. Again, our goal is to identify the right materials for the job so you get the product that you need at a fair price.
We perform a wall test before making a final determination on the materials. See Removable Wall Graphics - Test Before you Apply for more information on our wall test process.
